AN OPEN-BOOK TEST
"By faith Abraham, when put to the test..." —Hebrews 11:17

By preparing our hearts to serve God each day, we will not be caught off-guard when the time of testing comes (Lk 12:36-40). It will be second-nature, in fact, our new nature, to "seek to serve Him constantly" (Ps 105:4). Daily we ask for the grace to "serve the Lord with gladness" (Ps 100:2).

Each day, give to God your life, will, health, desires, hopes, and dreams. Then, when the test comes, your daily practice has trained your nature to offer everything up to God. Our Master's will is "known beforehand" so we "might have courage" (Wis 18:6) and be "ready" when the test comes (see Gn 22:1).

God is "the Tester of our hearts" (1 Thes 2:4), and we are the students. He uses our trials "to test [us] by affliction and find out whether or not it was [our] intention to keep His commandments" (Dt 8:2).

Life in Christ is an open-book test. We find the answers in the inspired Sacred Scriptures and in the Sacred Tradition of the Church. We should set aside time each week to study our faith, even daily if possible.

Prayer: Father, You never give a test I can't pass (1 Cor 10:13). Grace me to spend my life preparing to pass every test You send me, that You may be glorified through my life.

Promise: "...known beforehand to our fathers, that, with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they put their faith, they might have courage." —Wis 18:6

Praise: The risen Jesus is our hope. "That is why we read: 'Awake, O sleeper, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light' " (Eph 5:14).

YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW (Gal 6:7)= "ANH GIEO GIỐNG NÀO SẼ GẶT GIỐNG ẤY".
"He will repay each man according to his conduct." —Matthew 16:27: "NGƯỜI SẼ THƯỞNG PHẠT AI NẤY XỨNG VIỆC HỌ LÀM".

The prophet Nahum foretold the downfall of Nineveh, "the bloody city," the capital city of Assyria (Na 3:1). The nation of Assyria brutalized and destroyed many cities and nations for several centuries, including wiping out the Northern Kingdom of Israel in 722 B.C. As Nahum prophesied, Nineveh was defeated (Na 3:2ff). As Jesus prophesied, Nineveh was repaid by the Lord "according to [its] conduct" (Mt 16:27).

Our conduct is extremely important for our eternal future. We are to conduct ourselves as "a member of God's household" (1 Tm 3:15). The New Testament is filled with teaching on the conduct required of a disciple of Jesus: holiness (Rm 12:1-2), self-emptying love (Jn 15:12-13; 1 Cor 13:1-8), obeying God (Lk 22:42), crucifying our flesh and living by the Spirit's lead (Gal 5:16, 25; 6:14), and "a life of faith" in Jesus (Gal 2:20). We must deny ourselves, take up our daily cross, and follow Jesus unreservedly (Lk 9:23). God will then "repay [us] according to [our] conduct" (Mt 16:27).

Is your conduct befitting a member of God's household? (1 Tm 3:15) If not, repent! "Now is the acceptable time" to make your conduct all that the Lord commands (2 Cor 6:2). Offer your body to God as a living sacrifice (Rm 12:1).

Prayer: Father, may I give generously to You, not for my own reward, but to give You as much fruit as possible.

Promise: "Whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." —Mt 16:25

Praise: Following the declaration of Mary as Theotokos ("God-bearer") at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD, Pope St. Sixtus III oversaw the renovation of the basilica that was renamed St. Mary Major.

LIES ABOUT LOVE
"Jesus turned on Peter and said, 'Get out of My sight, you satan! You are trying to make Me trip and fall. You are not judging by God's standards but by man's.' " —Matthew 16:23

By the grace of the heavenly Father, Simon Peter made a great act of faith by professing Jesus as the Messiah, "the Son of the living God!" (Mt 16:16) In a short time, however, by denying the cross and "not judging by God's standards but by man's" (Mt 16:23), Peter showed that he did not understand what he had professed. This shows the astounding proclivity of the human person to self-deception.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?" (Jer 17:9, RSV-CE) We can deceive ourselves especially about our faith, conversions to the Lord, and relationships with Him. The classical doctors of mystical theology, particularly St. John of the Cross, are preoccupied with this proclivity to spiritual self-deception.

The Lord has resolved this extremely dangerous situation by giving us a new nature at Baptism (see Rm 6:4). Nonetheless, we must live our Baptisms by yielding to the Holy Spirit, Who will lead us into the Church, into submission to her authority, and to the foot of the cross. The Church will challenge our self-deception if we are obedient to her. The cross will purify our motives and reveal anything which is not authentic in our faith. So let us live our Baptisms by the power of the Holy Spirit and thereby love the Lord in truth.

Prayer: Father, probe my mind and test my heart (Jer 17:10).

Promise: "I will place My law within them, and write it upon their hearts." —Jer 31:33

Praise: Many Catholic priests ask for the intercession of St. John Mary Vianney. He is the patron of parish priests and his life exemplified fortitude and humility.

WITH ABANDON
"Carrying your festive tambourines, you shall go forth dancing with the merrymakers." —Jeremiah 31:4

The joy of the Lord is our strength (Neh 8:10). The Lord tells us to "praise His name in the festive dance" and to "sing praise to Him with timbrel and harp" (Ps 149:3). "Then the virgins shall make merry and dance, and young men and old as well" (Jer 31:13). So, this applies to all God's people, not only the young.

As we dance and make a joyful noise to the Lord (Ps 100:2), we are to "shout with joy" and proclaim His praise (Jer 31:7, 12). Shouting, singing, dancing, and clapping are human ways of expressing praise. If we can do these things for athletes, politicians, and celebrities, how much more worthy is our God of such acclaim!

Consider what the Lord has done for us. He died to save us from sin, slavery, death, damnation, and Satan (see Mt 15:22). He rose from the dead and poured out the Spirit. He is with us always (Mt 28:20). He will never forsake us. "With age-old love," He has loved us (Jer 31:3). He constantly forgives, heals, feeds, and frees those who call on Him. He alone is worthy to be praised (Rv 5:12), praised in every way, with all our strength, praised forever.

Prayer: Father, send the Spirit of praise so that I may worship You with abandon as David did (2 Sm 6:14).

Promise: "Jesus then said in reply, 'Woman, you have great faith! Your wish will come to pass.' That very moment her daughter got better." —Mt 15:28

Praise: After months without Mass because of the Covid pandemic, Dominic worships now with renewed fervor at Mass.

WALKING ON TIDAL WAVES
"At about three in the morning, [Jesus] came walking toward them on the lake." —Matthew 14:25

When Jesus walked on the water, He showed that He had the authority and power to "quickly crush Satan" under His feet (Rm 16:20) and to heal all diseases (see Mt 14:36). Jesus walks not just on water but on tidal waves and tempests. Because "full authority has been given" to Jesus "both in heaven and on earth" (Mt 28:18), "He is always able to save those who approach God through Him" (Heb 7:25). Jesus is the "Pantocrator," the all-powerful God (see Rv 1:8). Jesus' name is "above every other name" (Phil 2:9). Therefore, "there is no other name in the whole world given to men by which we are to be saved" (Acts 4:12).

In this two-thousand twenty second anniversary of Jesus' Incarnation, give your life totally to Jesus. Accept Jesus as your Savior, Lord, and God by His standards. Worship Jesus (see Rv 5:13).

Prayer: Father, teach me to walk on waves.

Promise: "From them will resound songs of praise, the laughter of happy men. I will make them not few, but many; they will not be tiny, for I will glorify them." —Jer 30:19

Praise: St. Peter Julian Eymard was a French priest with a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist. He was the founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament.
